9. About the Master of Applied IT

Since February 2023, we offer the Master of Applied IT at Fontys ICT. This is a one-year programme that follows on from the Fontys ICT bachelor's programme and similar programmes. The Master of Applied IT offers the opportunity for further professionalisation with broadening and deepening in the professional field. The study programme is coordinated with the student and depends on prior knowledge and desired learning objectives. In the first semester, students work collectively in the context of a research project. In the second semester, students work individually on a graduation project. Both semesters focus on applied research and research results are presented in the form of an experience paper. This experience paper is part of the portfolio.

The diversity of ICT sub-fields within our Master of Applied IT has an impact on the Master graduation projects you, as a graduation provider and client, offer. In the assignment description you can match the content of a possible graduation project optimally with one of the subfields, creating an ideal match between your activities and the diverse study paths of our students.

We group the various ICT sub-areas of graduation projects into the 5 architecture layers of the HBO-i matrix:

  • User interaction: UX design, front-end design, app design, webpage development, game design, etc.
  • Organisational processes: data analysis, dashboarding, IT consultancy, enterprise architecture, ERP systems, low-code process development, etc.
  • Infrastructure: networking, cloud hosting, IT operations, cyber security, etc.
  • Software: full-stack, front-end, or backend development, microservices, cloud computing, CI/CD, AI engineering, blockchain, VR/AR/XR development, etc.
  • Hardware interfacing: embedded systems, smart industry, MES, vision, robotics, IoT, etc.

The organisation around graduation is similar to that of the bachelor's programme. There are some important differences:

  • The company provides a research & development environment in which hands-on research takes place.
  • The company supervisor has himself obtained a Master of Science (MSc) and/or PhD in an ICT-related field.
  • The student comes to school 1 day a week for teacher guidance and peer supervision with fellow graduates.
